Can Severe Cough Be A Symptom Of Bronchitis?

Hello Doc, I have been coughing for a couple weeks (think since around April 4th) and had friends visiting and so probably didn t take it as easy as I could have. That being said, last week, I came to the conclusion that I have/had bronchitis which I am not sure I have ever had, I dont get sick all that often either. I had a Z-pack here and began taking and I am on the 4th day today. Most symptoms were abating and now largely disappeared save for the fact, I am seemingly exhausted more then I have been. Pretty hard to rally the energy to leave the house. Not sure I can do a lot but wait this out whether Bronchitis or Walking Pneumonia. I am 50 and very active and in good shape etc.... I am inclined to wait this out, does sunshine help in any way? Guess thats all I have for now, I have a great doctor and I am close to him, I just tend to go to Drs unless really necessary. Thoughts? And Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, you should definitely consult doctor to rule out bronchitis and pneumonia. Both, bronchitis and pneumonia are common after viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI - common cold). So consult doctor and get done clinical examination of respiratory system, chest x ray and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out lung infection.
PFT is must for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
You may need higher antibiotics or inhaled bronchodilators (Formoterol or Salmeterol) and inhaled Corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone) based on the reports.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
