Can Pneumonia Causes Low Potassium Level?

My two year old daughter and I were recently hospitalized with bacterial pneumonia. We also both had low levels of potassium. Mine was low enough that they gave me potassium thru IV. Is this common (low potassium) when sick with pneumonia, or should I follow-up to see if we, under healthy conditions, have low potassium and try to find cause. Thanks!

I can understand your concern.
Yes, pneumonia can cause low potassium level.
Pneumonia actually cause septicemia (blood stream infection).
And this can affect kidneys to excrete more potassium.
So pneumonia can cause hypokalemia (low potassium).
And yes, you should check potassium level during your healthy time. And if this is also low than consult nephrologist to rule out kidney problems. As kidney diseases are common cause for hypokalemia.
