Can Platelet Replacement Therapy Be Done To Increase Platelet Count?

I have had a recent history of low blood platelet counts while my actual RBC is normal. I have many different health issues; including osteo and rheumatoid arthritises, fibromyalgia, heart valve replacement (mitral w/ a St. Jude Mechanical Valve), CHF, dilated cardiomyopathy, COPD (caused by second-hand cigarette smoke), spinal stenosis and ankyling spondilosis in the lower spine. There are a few other issues; however, these are the major ones. I have successfully been taking 200mg. Celebrex for about 12 years now, but it has caused an increase of bruising and now, the low platelet count. My doctor has decreased my Celebrex in half, to 100mg. Of course, I am "feeling" the effects upon the lowering. My question is this: what is the risk in increasing the Celebrex back up to 200 mg? And, would I be a candidate for Blood Platelet Replacement Therapy to overcome the counts being low?

Hi....I m Dr. Kumarbhargav ....i understood your query....
Celebrex contains celecoxib which is non steroidal anti inflammatory drug...which has been prescribed mostly to take care of your joint pains and myalgia...

Celebrex doesn't have any significant effect on platelet count or blood but it has few side effects on your heart...it causes fluid retention and worsen your cardiac profile especially you are having history of heart disease....celebrex should be used with caution not without consultation from your cardiologist...

It also have some other many side effects for your knowledge...like GI ulceration, hepatic and renal and many may be...

So considering your problem...there is no need for platelet replacement..

Guidelines say...if platelets lowered as low as less than 10,000/cumm or lower and with bleeding tendency than only platelet replacement indicated....ok...

So take care...follow with your cardiologist....consult..if you have any bleeding tendency....
thanx for contacting....
