Can Macrodantin Be Taken During Pregnancy?

Hi I have a urinary tract infection, which I have had before the doctor gave me a prescription of macrodantin In case I got one again, but I m not sure if I should take it as there is a slim chance I could be pregnant. But I m in a lot of discomfort...

Thank you for the query.
Macrodantin contains nitrofurantoin which is used to treat urinary tratc infections.It is a pregnancy category B drug i.e.Animal studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women.So it will be safe in pregnancy BUT it should be avoided after 38 weeks of pregnancy or just before birth as it may lead to hemolytic anemia in baby.
