Can Low Levels Of Sodium Be Due To Diabetes?

My father diabetic from 15 years and also have blood pressure from past 2-3 years.......since last main he is having hyponatrmia(Sodium loss)....his sodium level is going down frequently till 119..... all the test have done and there is no hormonal issue etc.... we consulted Endiconologist, Nefrologist, Cardiac. No body could say exact causes of sodium loss. Due to frequent loss he is feeling week quite often.we are suspecting that might be due to some BP or diabetic medication? could you please advise?

Hi,
Drugs used for BP called diuretics (eg: hydrochloro thiazide, chlorthalidone) can potentially lower sodium on chronic use. first check if your dad is on these drugs.
Diabetic medications do not cause hyponatremia.
Another possibility is development of kidney disease causing sodium loss, what we call salt loosing nephropathy.
It is ideal to measure urinary sodium loss and osmolarity which would tell what is causing low sodium. please check if these tests are ordered; if not, ask your doctor for them.
