Can Large Lumps Under Armpits Be Indicative Of Folliculitis?

Hi, Last year I was diagnosed with folliculitis under both armpits. This left scarring. Due to this I had 6 months of antibiotics and stopped shaving. The large lumps have appeared again, one has turned purple and black from bruising and swelled to the size of small golf ball. This has now burst and blood is left on my dressings. I m not convinced that this is follicultius???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned.

Folliculitis is inflammation and infection of the hair follicles.

It can sometimes progress to cause abscess formation . An abscess is a localized collection of pus.
Some persons may develop repeated abscesses in the armpits.

It would be best to see your doctor for assessment. The area would need to be incised (small incision) to make sure that all of the infected material drains.

Your doctor may suggest a swab to send to the lab so that the exact bacteria causing the infection can be determined.

In addition to cleaning with antiseptics and applying topical antibiotics, a repeat course of oral antibiotics would be needed.

I hope this helps
