Can Iron Supplements Cause Drowsiness?

Should taking iron pills make me drowsy? The bottle doesn t mention drowsiness as a side affect, but I notice within an hour after taking my iron pills I am extremely exhausted and tired. I m only taking the iron because I am anemic and after an ER visit I was told to take them by my doctor.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
welcome to hcm,
I really appreciate your concern,
No usually most common oral iron supplement ferrous sulphate dont cause drowsiness.
Side effects of therapy with oral iron are most often diarrhea or constipation and epigastric abdominal discomfort. Taken after a meal, side effects decrease, but there is an increased risk of interaction with other substances. Side effects are dose-dependent, and the dose may be adjusted.

you, may notice that your stools become black. This is completely harmless. When iron supplements are given in a liquid form, teeth may reversibly discolor . Intramuscular injection can be painful, and brown discoloration may be noticed.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks. regards.
