Can Intercourse Temporarily Relieve Menstrual Cramps?

Why does intercourse temporarily relieve menstrual cramps? The actual motion seems to help. During intercourse my husband's penis feels like it's hitting something, which makes the cramps feel better. What can he being hitting and why is there relief?

During intercourse, the cervix might be hit, which contains nerve fibres that carry pain sensation.
Also, the cramps might be subsided for some time.
As such intercourse should worsen cramps as uterine movement is stimulated.
