Hello Sir,
Welcome to Health Care Magic. I read carefully your query and I understand your concern.
Actually the condition you are describing is not a common effect of
Citalopram usage.
I would like to mention that normal stools color can vary in shades of brown, mostly due to diet. Pale or clay-colored stools, that you are describing, are not normal. If your stools are pale or clay-colored, you may have a problem with the drainage of your biliary system, which is comprised of your
gallbladder, liver, and pancreas. Liver test abnormalities have been reported to occur in less than 1% of patients on citalopram, and elevations are usually modest and rarely require dose modification or discontinuation.
Having pale or clay-colored stools once in a while may not be a cause for concern but if it occurs frequently, you may have a serious illness.
You do not describe any other symptoms beside the color change of your stool. In order to give an appropriate answer, it would be helpful to give me further information and perform some tests and examinations.
With such a presentation on my clinic, I would recommend you undergo blood tests which include serum
bilirubin,
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Serum transaminases (AST & ALT), GGT,
Prothrombin time (PT),
Hepatitis serology, Antimitochondrial antibody, Urine bilirubin, AMY. I would recommend you to make also an abdominal
ultrasound (ECHO).
Hope I answered to your question. For further concern feel free to ask again.
Take Care,
Dr. Ina Zaimi
