Can I Take Thyroid Tablet To Reduce Postpartum Weight Gain?
Hi, I am 27 years old. before pregnancy I weighed around 75 Kgs and now after pregnancy I gained 25 kgs. During pregnancy I has thyroid test done and results were normal. After pregnancy also I have done T3, T4 tests but results were normal. Now it is been 2 years and i am still on the same gained weight around 99kgs. I am trying to loss my weight through diet and sometimes exercises but it is not working. So I wanted to ask you if I can take any thyroid tablet which helps me to reduce weight.
Hi there, I have understood your concern and I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.
Please do not panic. I will suggest you to get thyroid function tests done. Only if your tests indicate hypothyroidism- meaning lowered thyroid function, then only thyroid hormone medications need to be taken. I will suggest you not to take them without medical supervision.
I will suggest you to opt for a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen. Include more portions of fruits and vegetables and salads in daily diet. Avoid refined sugars and deep fried foods and bakery products. Have a regular exercise schedule that includes cardiovascular exercise and weight training exercise. Please do not go behind fast weight loss and fad diets. It proves harmful to health in the long run.
I hope this answer helps you. Thanks. Dr. Purushottam Neurgaonkar
