Can I Take Magnesium Supplements Though I Have Low Vitamin D?
Hello. I have been taking omeparzole and esomeprazole for several years, due to GERD. Recently I went to urgent care for something unrelated and the doctor there asked if I was concerned about low levels of magnesium. My primary care physician has already tested me and found me to be low in Vitamin D, would it hurt to take magnesium supplements as well?
No, it will not. Your Gerd medications can cause deficiencies because it changes the ph of your stomach and certain meds/supplements are not well absorbed in this alkaline stomach. Magnesium and calcium often go low. Also, vitamin D deficiency is truly common.
My opinion on your question is Magnesium will not hurt or interact with your vitamin D. Make certain you are takin D3, not D2. Generally doctors will prescribe 1,000-5,000 IU for repletion. Magnesium repletion is generally 200 mg per day. You can take them at the same time with a glass of water.
I hope I have addressed your question. Feel free to come back to HCM for further assistance if needed. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
