Hello and welcome. Placenta is the portion of the pregnancy that supplies nutrients to the baby from the spinal cord. It is usually located in the upper part of uterus. A low placenta that reaches the cervix may cause bleeding. Sometimes as the lower part of the uterus grows more than the upper, the placenta appears to move away from the os. So later in pregnancy it may look as if the placenta is attached to the upper segment. Having said this, it is not possible to predict when it may begin to bleed. So women with placenta previa are advised bed rest. If you were my patient I would advise you bed rest for a month and repeat scan after that. Bed rest is advised as long as the placenta is low. Another school of thought says that ambulation may be advised if there is no bleeding. Some women do continue to work as bleeding is unpredictable, even with bed rest. But chances of bleeding are low with rest. If bleeding is severe, hospitalisation may also be needed. So this is not a simple condition.
