Can Hypothyroidism Cause Metabolism Problems?

I have Systemic Sclerosis and hypothyroidism (I use Synthroid). Recently I have gained ten pounds in two weeks.
Are routine blood tests for thyroid function the final word in metabolism problems? In other words, could I have more than a routine problem with my thyroid that is affecting my weight?

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
I read your query and understood your concern.
There are many patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism who start the treatment with levothyroxine but still the symptoms persist.
Until now the thyroid hormonal level is the only indicator of the thyroid function.
There are many studies who tried to raise the dose of levothyroxine despite the normal hormonal level, in order to try to improve the symptoms but there is no efficacy.
So if the TSH level is within the normal ranges with the actual dose of levothyroxine than the thyroid is excluded as a cause for your symptoms.
Your weight gain may be probably as a side effect of the MS treatment or sedentary life.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
