Can Hypothyroidism Cause Cyst On Thyroid Gland?

I have hypothyroidism and have been on medication for years now. Earlier this year I was tested and told I have a cyst on my thyroid and it will be checked within 6 months of finding it. I am concerned as to what caused it, what it may control in my body functions, and will it go away on its own?

Hi,
Cysts in thyroid can be seen in patients with or without hypothyroidism. It is not related to any of the body functions if your thyroid function tests on thyroxine replacement is normal. The cause is mostly unknown.

The investigation needed in a thyroid cyst or any thyroid swelling is periodic ultrasound examination (once in 6 months or yearly) and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). If your investigations are normal (seen in 95% of cysts) no treatment is needed if the cysts are small. Very rarely the FNAC may show some evidence of cancer in that case the thyroid needs to be removed.

There are chances that small cysts may disappear in second scanning.
