Can Hyperthyroid Medicine, Neo-Mercazole, Cause Dry Eyes And Sugar Level Fluctuation?
iI am 60 and was under-active for 10 years but very unusually have switched to being over-active (hyperthyroidism). I am currently taking Neo-Mercazole (4x 5mg per day). I am having eye problems – sore, dry, and more difficulty focussing when reading. Is that likely to be related to the medication or the condition? My blood sugar was about 5.5 – is there likely to be any effect of the condition or medication on blood sugar level? thanks
Welcome and thank you for asking! I read carefully your concerns. The problems that you are having actually with the eyes are not as a side effect of the Neo-Mercazole rather than caused by Graves' disease. The antibodies that affect the thyroid gland and stimulate it to over product hormones, can affect the eyes too. You have to see an endocrinologist so he can evaluate the severity of the situation. Meanwhile you can use artificial tear drops, in the morning and evening. Stop smoking (if you are a smoker) and use sunglasses when you go outside. Blood sugar is another problem, without any connection with the thyroid problem. Hope the information is helpful. Do not hesitate to ask if you have further queries. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta Guni
