Can High Levels Of Mercury Exposure Cause Hashimoto's?

Many years ago I was exposed to extremely high levels of elemental mercury vapor. I suffered from diarrhea and drooling for months but never connected the dots. All of my physicals during this time and several years after exposure revealed a small goiter but blood work was normal. Eventually, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. My grandmother had her thyroid removed so I am wondering if I might have a genetic predisposition which was triggered by the mercury exposure.

Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
Your case sound interesting, but there is no clinical study until now (in my knowledge) that tried to find a relation between mercury exposure.
Of course Hashimoto has a hereditary component but the trigger factor is unknown.
What is most important about Hashimoto and under active thyroid, is the fact that thyroid hormones can be substituted easily.
