Can High Dose Prednisone Cause Swollen Ankle With Fluid Ooze Out?

I have Lupus. I was put on high dose prednisone, which caused me to retain fluid to the extent that my legs were so swollen, that the pores split and fluid would run down my legs. I had severe pitting, weeping edema. Once the meds were decreased, and the swelling subsided, my inner and outer ankle area appears mottled under the skin, almost like petechiae, but in larger patches. What is this?

Hello,

The specific medical term for this is called Livedo Reticularis. This is frequently seen in patient with Lupus, specifically when Lupus patients have what is called the anticardiolipin antibodies in their blood. There is no specific treatment with regard to this although some authors have mentioned warming the lower legs by submerging it in warm water.

This would have an effect of dilating the blood vessels and hopefully resolving the mottling appearance. Most authors at least agree that the avoidance of cold does improve the condition overtime. I’m not sure if that was useful for you or not, Please let me know if I can be of additional assistance.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
