Can Herbal Medicines Be Taken With Delzicol And Prednisone?

I have Ulcerative Colitis since 1999. I am on Delzicol for life probably and now taking Prednisone for a flare and it seems to be getting better. My question, is it safe to take herbal meds such as Boswellia with (which I have read is excellent in treatment of UC) and also is it safe to take the herb med Olive Leaf with Delzicol and Prednisone? Also, is there a relatively safe adult beverage that is the least invasive with UC. Have several big social functions coming up and would love to be able to have some wine or if there is something least difficult on the gut? If not, I ll continue as I am now. Tee-totaler : ) Thank you so much!!

Hi,
It's very difficult to say whether boswellia or olive leaf is going to interact with your current medications. It's because herbal drugs doesn't undergo rigorous clinical trials and we do not have such details. So, if you are trying, then it's like a blind trial without much scientific data to look on into interactions.
I would not recommend my patient any herbal drugs because of the same reason. And more so if they are doing well on Delzicol(mesalamine). Occasional flare ups can be managed effectively.
Now coming to your next question, I would recommend my patient to avoid alcohol. Most of the practise guidelines states to either avoid or limit the alcohol. This is because some patients might see a flare up after consuming alcohol. In case you can't avoid alcohol, do limit it to minimum and never exceed safe limit.
I hope the above information helps you in deciding about the future course of treatment and regarding alcohol consumption. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful party days ahead.
