Can Heart Skip A Beat During Exercise?

I had a baby almost 18 months ago...I gained a lot of weight with my pregnancy, and still have yet to take the weight off. I am about 50 pounds overweight. I have had the occasional "heart skipping a beat" before...but this past week I have been excercising and have been noticing it more and more..I have noticed it both during and after excercise. I feel like I am finally getting back into a routine of excercise, but, am starting to be really afraid to continue excercising. Today after my walk on the treadmill, I could actually feel the heart skip about 3 times. I am a 29 year old female.

Thanks for your question, I am Dr Asanghanwa, a skipped heart beat might be an occasional event in young people with no underlying cardiac problem. It however is a cause for concern when it is repetitive like in your case. Your overweight of 50 pounds might be putting an extra effort on the heart. I advise you do an ECG and consult a cardiologist urgently. I would advise you against sports or high energy input exercise for the moment until you consult a cardiologist who would prescribe what kind of exercise you can do. This because the skipped beats might just be the sign of some serious underlying heart condition. Good luck
