Can glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine phosphate cause elevated blood sugar level?

My Age is 30/ female I am using Jovit 900 mg tables for more than a year, because an Orthopedic consultant recommended it for my knee joint pain, crackling sound in joints and weak bones. Dose glucosamine sulphate and glucosamine phosphate elevates blood sugar level. I never had high level of glucose in my blood but now my latest tests indicate that I have hyperglycaemia. Random sugar 268, and with Fasting 191.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There is nothing yo suggest that this drug can increase the sugar level , yes your knee pain may have restricted your exercise that may be one reason, but it looks that you probably have diabetes in the light of the reading given. I would advise you should do your HBA1C level which would show us the sugar level of about last two months, that can better tell us about your status.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I have been taking glucosamine sulfate for about a year. Last September I had a heart attack (one stent) and was prescribed Plavix. I ordered a different brand of g.s. And on the label it said to consult dr. If taking a blood thinner. I am getting black and blue marks and figured it was because of the Plavix and small dose aspirin. Have I been taking l tablet a day (750 mg) as too much. This new one is 1000. Thank you for your advice.

I never had PCS growing up. I am a 34 year old male, and started taking a supplement of Glucosamine 1500 mg + MSM 1500 mg (2 tablets is the total dosage) daily. While taking this supplement, I started having sharp chest pains, and didn t know if I was going to die of a heart attack. I did figure out that if I took a deep breath, I would feel a sudden pop, and the pain would go away. I am so glad taking the deep breath worked, because the pain was crazy. This would give me relief for a while, until I got another episode (around a couple a day). After going through this for days, I decided to try and stop taking the supplement, along with the multi-vitamin I was taking, and the PCS completely stopped. I have not had any since I stopped taking them. I just wanted to see if you thought this may be some information that could be used to isolate a certain chemical that may be elevated in some people that may trigger episodes of PCS. Thanks.
