Can Gist Tumours Be Completely Cured?

My best friend has had gist tumours in her stomach for nearly two years. She has been treated with a chemo tablet and one of the tumours erupted in her stomach a week ago. Since then he has been in an induced coma as the family asked the doctors to open her up and they cut her bowel and flashed her out. Doctors haven t stitched her up yet and tried a couple of different antibiotics but she is in the same condition with no improvement yet. What is likely to happen from now?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history of your best friend suffering from GIST tumor for which she had been given Chemotherapy tablets but the one of the tumors erupted in her stomach for which she was operated it seems from your history, and is in coma, ? not stitched up.
The history of GIST tumor is a dreaded disease as it is rare and still under evaluation as there is no sure-shot treatment.
Since the patient is in coma, there has to be a reason and unless I know about the details it is difficult to predict the outcome.
I am sure the Doctors must be doing the best and a combined approach for the management of multi-specialty discipline can help a lot.
Tumors found in early stages are well managed.
Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are targeted therapy drugs that block signals needed for tumors to grow. TKIs may be used to treat GISTs that cannot be removed by surgery or to shrink GISTs so they become small enough to be removed by surgery. Imatinib mesylate and sunitinib are two TKIs used to treat GISTs.
Hence follow what the Doctor say and do and prob ably she may come out nicely.
