Can Fetal Abnormalities Be Detected Through Ultrasounds?

Hello i just want to know what do doctors look for in ultrasounds? Im a first time dad and my girlfriends pregnancy seems to be going perfect besides the fact she has gestational diabetes now at 29 weeks. If there were any complications would they have seen them on the ultrasounds by now?
