Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I have friend of mine who is 19 years old. She became depressed for like two weeks before she started fainting after which her parents took her to a Doctor and he diagnosed as a Depression and gave her Mertazapine, which she has been taking ever since. At first she was okay and the fainting also stopped, but now she is again depressed and sometimes thinking suicide at some rate. My question is Does she have depression as i couldn't find fainting as a symptom? Could it be some other mental disease mis-diagnose as depression and what should we do now?
I do appreciate your concern for your friend. You haven't mentioned her symptoms other than fainting. Depression is a condition in which a person becomes sad, feels easily tired, has sleep and appetite disturbances. Your friend is having suicidal ideas according to you which usually occurs when the severity of depression is high. Regarding her fainting, it can due to dissociative episodes which can occur as part of depression or can exist as an independent disorder in addition to depression. The reason in any case is some underlying stress.
Mirtazapine is an effective anti-depressant and since she had responded to it earlier, dose or mirtazapine can be increased. It will take care of the depression as well as dissociative episodes. More importantly, it is important to find out the reason for being stressed and improve coping to face situation.
