Can Exposure To Chemical Cause Permanent Damage To Body?

I suffered from sever chemical sensitivities about 20 years ago. I m 47 now and it seems that something triggered the chemical sensitives again. I owned a 2012 jeep grand Cherokee for one year, up until last June. During the first few months of owning the jeep I was getting dizzy when driving and feeling generally not good for a couple of hours after being out of the car. After an exhaustive investigation we determined that the car battery which is located in the car cabin under the passenger seat in a compartment in the floorboard. The ventilation tube for the battery was not connected and the mechanic suspected that I was likely breathing fines from the battery. My research online shows that batteries typically emit hydrogen gas or hydrogen sulfide. I probably was exposed for 6 months before connecting the ventilation tube. The strange thing is that I have become so chemically sensitive in cars that I get dizzy and react to everything such as leather even in a 2 year + old car. It is very bizarre. My question is could my exposure to these gases caused permanent damage to my body and also if any, what type of doctor would be best to see.

Hello and thank you for your question. It is true that some people develop chemical sensitivities that persist or recur later in life. I do not know that you would call it permanent damage to your body but it can surely be a distressing problem. It would be most helpful for you to see an allergy specialist that specializes in chemical sensitivities. Many doctors that treat asthma and allergies are very good at assisting patients with chemical sensitivities. You may also find some helpful information at this website
