Can Enlarged Tonsils And Adenoids Be Completely Cured With Antibiotics?

hi Dr my soon is going to be 3 years old in 2 weeks time 16,5Kg 1metre and 3 cm. he has got enlarged tonsils and after an x-ray was taken we now know that he is having enlarged adenoids too. He has got fluid in his ear and he has dificulty in briathing when he is facing up while in sleep(OSA). We spoke to our ENT and he said that we can wait and see how it goes. My consern is that for the last year he has been only once with high fever he complain about his throat being in pain but other than that he is doing fine...lots of energy as always . I was wondering whether we should go through some andibiotics and something for his ear first before we take the decision to remove them. but yet again although enlarged his tonsils he doesn t have any issues should we romoved them too or only the adenoids will fix his OSA.thank you in advanced.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 3 year old son having OSA, enlarged adenoids and enlarged tonsils. ENT Surgeon's advise noted.
My thoughts:
An actual history taking and an actual examination by the ENT Surgeon is always decision making.
Surely a course of antibiotic, antihistamine and ant-inflammatory will be most useful Oral steroid may be advised.
Wait for three weeks of good course of medications and see the results.
Surgery is done only if the medical line of treatment fails.
Decongestant nasal drops, sleeping on one side can help with OSA.
So follow the advise of your ENT Surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
