Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Endurance And Weight Training Be Done With Heart Rate Abnormality?
I am 57 years old and have been having occasional episodes of paroxymal supraventricular tachycardia over the past 15-20 years. I have done several cardiac work-ups that were unremarkable but a recent stress echocardiogram revealed my heartrate abnormality. I am being treated by a cardiologist now who has prescribed Veralan 120 mg daily. My question is this: I am a clinical dietitian with a background in sports and fitness. In the past I did a lot of exercise, both endurance and weight lifting. I last lifted regularly about 2 years ago. Are there any concerns with this type of training given my condition? I am taking it as a given to begin at a lower intensity and work up to more challenging workouts. Thank you.
Long standing tachycardias like in your case may cause a condition called tachycardia cardiomyopathy. Therefore you should avoid conditions which would induce such condition such as vigorous exercises, and exercise stress. It is advisable to visit your cardiologist and get an Holter monitoring and discuss about the treatment including radio frequency ablation.
