Can Encorate Chrono 300 Be Taken By A Child For Long Time?

A boy of 12 is prescribed encorate chrono 300 to be taken once a day at night, by a psychiatrist. The boy is violent, disruptive, and having changing moods. Will he need to continue medication for long time? Is there any side effect if taken for more than six monts

The encorate contains valproic Acid. The dose is 10-40 mg/kg/day. At 12 years the average weight of a child should be around 30 kg. So your son is on the minimal dose. The side effect of valproate may be dose related or unrelated to dose. The dose related side effect is minimal in your case as the child is on low dose.The main side effect is liver dysfunction as it is metabolised through the liver. The early symptoms are nausea,vomiting or poor appetite.
Liver function test should be done once the child has these symptoms. Some physician advise to get a liver function test done even in the absence of symptoms after 3 months of medication.
