Attempting to open a totally blocked carotid artery is too dangerous. There would be an unacceptably high risk of stroke.
Having it remain closed doesn't increase the risk of stroke.
We have numerous patients that live long and healthy lives with a blocked carotid. The important thing is to follow up at least annually with a vascular surgeon to make sure that the other side stays open.

My doctor hear a swishing sound in cartoid artery when I went in for my physical. She sent me for a cartoid doppler, the results of which read normal but her diagnosis was cartoid bruit; but no further action was recommended. I am 53 year old female. I have 100 % blocked carotid artery on my left and it was 80% blocked on my right side. I had surgery on the right side Oct 2014. I went back for an ultra sound today at a health screening and was told it is 50% blocked. I take Crestor 10 MG a day that was just increased recently like a month ago was on 5 mg. I also take metropiraol one at night and one at morning. Hello......I am 76 years old. 10 years ago had a severe stroke; entire right side paralyzed. left carotid artery 60% blocked; entire right carotid blocked. Hi, I recently had a scheduled angioplasy and two stents implanted. I had a followup visit this week with the cardiologist. He informed me that he implanted an expired stent. This is a Taxis drug illuding stent. Is this against FDA regulations to implant an expired stent in a patient? I believe there must be strict FDA regulations in doing so? Tom J
on 4/21st, I had an Endostent abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Came home on (22nd), a light red rash in appearance started in the hospital, within 24 hrs of surgery, it has become increasingly expanding legs, (1/2 down thighs), waist, arms, underarms, Saw primary care doctor, he thought it probably was a drug reaction, however, it has intensified. to very bright reds. it appears to not breaking through the skin. Do not see the doctor that did the surgery for 2 weeks.
