Can Diverticulitis Flare Up Last For More Than Three Weeks?
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis two weeks ago and put on ten days of cipro. The stabbing pains in lower abdomen are gone but I still have off and on annoying pain; not as bad as before but definitely still there. Can a diverticulitis flare up last for three weeks and longer?
Yes, if flare up not responding to one drug you have to add one more according to severity of infection and stool culture sensitivity.
It may take few days to weeks to recover. You can get it done colonoscopy and ultrasound abdomen to rule out related complications like abscess formation or fistula et cetera.
You can use AmoxicillinClavulanate drug thrice a day for one week, Metronidazole drug also useful. Food is very important in controlling the flare up avoid high fatty, spicy diet.
Take only liquid or soft diet during flare ups and if symptoms not improved, please consult your doctor, he/she will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
