Can Decongestant Be Taken Over Amitryptilyn, Topomax?

Hi. I ve got a head cold and am suffering from nasal congestion, runny nose (the mucus is clear) and body aches. I take 25 mg of amitryptilyn at night, along with topomax and a muscle relaxer for headaches. Can I take an over-the-counter decongestant if I am taking these other medications?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Tricyclic antidepressants like Amitriptyline and decongestants like phenylephrine do have a serious interaction that may unpredictably alter the effect of the phenylephrine.

While you would probably be alright if you did take a decongestant, I would recommend you use a nasal steroid instead, which would probably be more effective for your nasal congestion and runny nose, and does not have any serious interactions with your other medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
