Can Cortisone Injections, As Nerve Blocks For Migraine, Cause Irregular Periods That Is Light And Brown?

I am a 38 year old female. Had a cortisone injection in my shoulder on December 23rd. I have always had regular periods and should have started on December 25th or 26th. Instead, it started on January 1st and is very light and a brown color blood. It's still going on the same way. I asked the dr. in the pain clinic today and she insists that there is no way this can be related and something else is wrong. This is the first irregularity in my life. I am concerned because I get another cortisone shot for my back and nerve blocks in my head for migraines on Feb 3rd. I just need to get a second opinion. My regular dr. has not called me back yet for referral to the gynecologist.

Hi
Welcome to HCM,
It is well documented, and known side effects of a cortisone injection given for joint disorders locally. In fact 50 percent of women in reproductive age group will observe this delay of menstrual period and decrease in flow of blood. But it does not mean that you should not go for another injection. We always have to weigh the benefits and side effects of any treatment plan. if it is really indicated, go for it. Once your course will finish, you may see your period again coming regularly. If you are planning for pregnancy, then you may discuss abut other options of management. I would also suggest that, you should go for your regular Pap test, and other gynecological tests also to rule out any associated cause for above symptoms.
Hope i have answered your question.
