Can Constipation Have Adverse Effects On Health?

I have had issues with constapation all my life. Recently I probably had the worse case of it where I was pretty backed up for 4 days. I was praying I would jsut go, but I didn t and my fear of getting too backed up and tenderness I was experiencing in my low back and under my ribs made me resort to ExLax. I went a total of 4 times in two days and got back on track, but ever since I have had tendernees in my lower rib cage on the right side and now the left as well. I have a Abdominal ultrashound and Pelvic CT scheduled friday, but in the meantime I have convinced myself I am dying by everything I am reading. How normal is this with constapation?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

It cant be harmful for health unless there is some organic obstruction.
Otherwise, if it lasts for up to 7 days, it wont have any bad effects if this improves after this time.
In future. you should try with changing lifestyle and dietary habits. You need to increase fiber intake. Good fiber sources include bran and other whole grains found in cereals, breads, and brown rice, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, carrots, and asparagus, Fresh fruits, or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, and prunes Beans. Also, you should exercise regularly. Moving your body will keep your bowels moving, too. Second, you may at times need to try a laxative. If your teen has constipation problems, talk to your teen's doctor before trying laxatives.
In cases of prolonged constipation, you should do colonoscopy to rule out some other underlying cause.

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
DR. Ivan Rommstein
