Can Bone Age Test Show The Possible Height A Girl Can Grow?

My daughter turns 14 at the end of June and was recently told by our pediatrician that she is done growing when I asked if something was wrong because she hasn't grown at all since starting her period when she was 12 yrs. and 3 mnths. old (she's been 5' and 3/4" for over a year). She also recently gained 10 lbs. and now weighs 122 lbs . When I asked how he could tell she won't grow anymore without doing any tests or x-rays, he said because of my height (5'0") and dad's height (5'9") and the fact that she hasn't grown since starting period and not to waste our money on a bone age test because he's positive she won't grow any more. When my daughter was measured at 3 years old I clearly remember her pediatrician saying he anticipates her adult height to be around 5'4". I always thought girls stop growing at around 14/15. Can she still grow some more, or how can I tell if she's really done?

Hello dear,

An X ray for bone age determination can be taken to look for the fusion of epiphyses.
An individual stops growing in height after the fusion of the Epiphyses (growth plates) of the long bones, which occurs by the age of 15-19 yrs in females.

So...as your daughter is only 17 yrs old now, there is a good chance of an increase in height.

Make sure that she is taking a healthy & balanced diet, exercise regularly & avoid stress.
Protein rich diet like soya, groundnut, pulses, etc should be incorporated in her diet plan.
Consumption of more of natural diet like fresh fruits, green vegetables, milk, eggs, wheat, etc.
Avoiding oily and junk food.
These measures will be helpful in improving her height & body built.

Wishing her a Good Health.
Take care.
