Can Blocked Nerve Cause Paralysis During Surgery For Back Pain?

Hi, actually my dad has got acute backpain(lower back). He is right now admitted in hospital, he is not able to walk. The doctors have suggested that he should go through an operation, but my dad fears that he may get paralysed as there is a nerve which is blocked i think.Occasionally he has sone physiotherapy sessions..please advise
