Can Azithromycin Be Given To 3 Year Old For Fever?

If Cefixime(3rd Generation Cepholosporin) Oral suspension has not worked in a 3 year old child, then will it be appropriate to give Azithromycin 200 Syrup? The child is having a fever upto 101 degrees Fahrenheit. A mild dry cough too. Is on Cefixime oral suspension for last 2 days. Have taken Cefixime Oral Suspension even 6 months before due to fever as prescribed by the Paeditrician. Please guide.

Hi...by what you quote (as there are both fever and cough) it seems like a viral illness.

Both Cefixime and Azithromycin are antibiotics used for Enteric fever or Typhoid. Cefixime specifically doesn't act for upper respiratory illness like this.

I SUGGEST YOU NOT TO USE BOTH CEFIXIME AND AZITHROMYCIN AS THEY ARE ANTIBIOTICS AND ARE NOT INDICATED FOR VIRAL ILLNESS LIKE THIS.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.
