Can Application Of Vaseline On Eyelashes Prevent Crusing In A Child With Conjunctivitis?
I think my son has conjunctivitis and I think his eyes will be crusted over in the morning as he has a constant flow of puss coming from them. I will take him to the doctors in the morning but was wondering if a bit of Vaseline on his lashes would prevent them crusting over tonight?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
HI, I have read your query & understand your concern. Conjunctivitis is charactorised by pus discharge from eyes & crusting & sticking of eye lids in morning. Putting vaseline may help in preventing crusting to some extent, but not completely..as the pus would keep on flowing. Instead, you can start putting antibiotic eye drops ( over the counter) 2 drops in each eye three times a day. In morning, foment & clean eyelids with warm water & cotton.. this will make separation of stickened lid, and also soothe the inflammation of the eye. Consult an ophthalmologist for specific treatment. Thanks.
