Can Appendicitis Cause High Blood Sugar Levels In An Insulin Dependent Diabetic?

My husband is a insulin dependent diabetic using the omnipod. He has been complaining all day about right side discomfort, bloating and a mint flavored kind of heartburn. Also not eating a lot but drinking water. When he
checked his blood sugar last it was 385. I am concerned he may be having problems with his appendics.
Both his brother and daughter had theirs removed by emergency. Can the appendicitis cause high blood sugar?

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

First, I feel you are trying to decide if high blood sugar is a component of appendicitis. So let me confirm that this is not the case. The two conditions are not directly related.

However indirect connections may be considered. If there is a severe infection, the blood sugars will rise. So whether the source of infection is appendicitis, or a pneumonia or a urinary tract infection, the sugars may rise. Of course drop in sugar is also known.

On the flip side, if the sugars are uncontrolled, the chances of complications are high and infections may happen more easily.

I would suggest you meet your doctor, in view of the abdominal problems and the sugars, especially since when he is not eating the regular diabetes medicines will need to be modified

Check sugars regularly

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above so i can be of help further. Best of luck.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.
