Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have developed a foot drop and after 2 MRI s, and EMG and seeing both an othropod and a neurologist a cause cannot be found. I can t get by the fact that in early January of this year I fell down a flight of stairs and incurred a significant injury to my shin on this leg. My foot drop didn t start until the first of May...could they be connected? I am a 63 year old female 5/6 200 lbs and am diabetic for the last 3 years and am on oral meds.
Falling down a flight of steps can in fact be the cause of your foot drop. The most common cause of this disorder is compression of a nerve in your leg called the peroneal nerve. It is very possible that falling down a flight of steps could have caused this injury. Sometimes, foot drop caused by this mechanism is temporary however, there is no way to really know if this is the case or if this will be more permanent condition for you. I do apologize that I can not be more optimistic regarding this, it is difficult to anticipate where the nerve injury occurred and if it is reversible.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. David Girardi, Internal Medicine Specialist
