Can An ECG Electrode Placed On The Leg Cause A Burn Mark?
Ok. I was an inpatient in the hospital a month ago from a suspected heart attack. I had several test done, but it was determined that I did not have a heart attack. However, one of the electrodes that was placed on my leg was inadvertently left on without either I or the doctors realizing it until I had been home for 2 days. It wse on for a total of 4 days in the hospital while hooked up to the EKG. Now I have a perfectly round burn looking mark on that spot that resembles a 3rd degree burn. It itches and hurts at times. Is it possible that I was burned or is this a reaction you have ever seen or heard of?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Most likely you have an allergic contact dermatitis to the adhesive used to keep the electrode in place. Itching and redness are symptoms of an allergic contact dermatitis. I suggest you to apply a moderately potent topical steroid, e.g., Mometasone Furoate 0.1% cream or Triamcinolone Acetonide 0.1% cream, twice daily for a week or 10 days. In addition, you can take an oral Antihistamine, e.g., Cetirizine tablet once every evening for symptomatic relief from itching.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Kakkar S.
