Can An 11 Year Old Girl Take Norethisterone?

can-11-year-old-girl-take-norethisterone? I have researchd this drug which my doctor and pharmacist insisted was not a contraceptive, but it is and I am concerned that I was misled and made my decision to give this drug to my child based on the wrong information. IS IT SAFE?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thank you for your query.
I appreciate your concern for your daughter's safety.
Norethisterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). It is like the hormone progesterone that your body makes naturally. It is a component in some of the birth control combination pills.
Since it is similar to a naturally occurring hormone, it is safe if it is given for the right indication.
I shall give you my opinion on it, if you let me know the diagnosis of your daughter's problem for which the doctor prescribed Norethisterone.
Take Care
Dr Noble Zachariah
