Can Alcohol Consumption Trigger Keratoconus In The Eyes?
I was diagnosed with Keratoconus a few months back. My left eye is more severe than my right eye. I have become allergic to drinking alcohol over the years which causes me to have mucus buildup in my nose. I have also begun to have eye problems only in the left eye after a night of drinking alcohol and waking up the next morning. The symptoms that I experience in my left eye are a burning sensation, it feels like sandpaper is moving around in my eye if I open it, and it hurts to open my left eye. Does alcohol make the keratoconus worse?
I understand your concern. Keratoconus basically happens when the outer layer of your eye, the cornea thins and loses its dome shape by becoming more prominent. It usually runs in the family, but is exacerbated by factors which interfere with the effects of the natural body's antioxidant that normally clear out the cornea's waste products. Alcohol is one of these factors, and besides, it also works as a water and lubricant "thief" by drying out the water from the body, so abstinence would be best in your case. I recommend you visit an ophthalmologist in order to get a better evaluation of your eye condition and receive the proper treatment. Wishing you all the best
