Can Alcohol Be Consumed When Liver Enzyme Levels Are Elevated?

My son had Mononucleosis 16 years ago caused by the CMV and had severe liver involvement. Hi SGOT and SGPT as well as LDH. 5 years ago he came down with Lymes disease. I reviewing his recent blood tests (over the past few years) his LDH, AST and ALT are still high, yet his physician has not addressed this. Is this residual damage from his CMV infection and should he be drinking alcohol or taking Tylenol, etc?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

When liver enzymes are elevated alcohol intake should be cut down. If alcohol intake is not cut down the patient may develop CMV induced hepatitis.

In my opinion, you should get him physically examined & get his liver treated at the earliest. Neglect will result in the worsening of the symptoms & complications like liver inflammation, hepatitis & spleen enlargement.

Your treatment will depend upon the severity of the disease detected. Stay away from addictions if any. Take homemade food, avoid oily spicy food.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
