Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 38 year old male weighing 112lbs. i recently ran a half marathon, was taking advil for 3 weeks for a sore knee and had my physical/blood two days after the race. My LFT was: ALT 141 and AST 80. No alcohol consumption for 9 weeks prior. Could the increase in Liver Function be a result of the Advil and the 13.1 mile race that participated in two days prior to the annual physical? Blood pressure 130/78.
Hello! Thank you for your question! Regarding your concern I would explain that transaminases (ALT & AST) increase in your situation reflects primarily a skeletal muscle injury. These enzymes (ALT & AST) though they are considered for evaluation of liver status, they do exist as well in almost all the body cells. So based on your clinical history, AST & ALT levels and their ratio recorded after a very strenuous exertion I do conclude that it is the skeletal muscle responsible for that increase. Advil used in high doses for a prolonged time, would alter more seriously your clinical status if it were the offending cause. Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings form Dr. Iliri
