Can A Surgeon Do A Metatarsal Replacement To Relieve From Pain?

Yes. I had a 5th metatarsal break that was fixed via surgery on Sept 8th..... insertion of a screw.

Surgery was painless. Tried to follow my surgeon's instructions post op. XRays taken at 3 weeks.... appeared to be a great result.

Gradually begin to exercise doing non traumatic exertion.... rowing machine and elliptical trainer.

Everything felt great until a week ago when the foot started to swell again and hurt in virtually the same location.

Question: Can a surgeon do a metatarsal "replacement" (i.e., some type of metal rod etc) to solve this problem "permanently" so I don't keep reinjuring the bone?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The answer to your question is yes, there may be osteosyntesis of the broken metatarse with plates, but it requires an open surgery. This is indicated if the metatarse broke again after the first treatment with external screw fixation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
