Can A Headache After A Minor Head Injury Be Symptom Of A Concussion?
My son went out sledding today. He seemed fine but then when it was time to go to bed, he complained of a headache. I asked him if he hurt his head while sledding, he said maybe. He said at one point the sled hit him in the mouth. Could he have a concussion? I gave him some Motrin before he fell asleep. My concern is that he is attending a basketball camp and if he has a concussion, he is not supposed to be physically active. Should I take him to his pediatrician to have him checked out even if he doesn't complain of the headache anymore?
You have a legitimate concern. If a patient presented to me with above complain, I'll want to know the following: - age - do a brief mental status exam (ask for his name, location, date) depending on his age. He could have had a concussion if there was any trauma to the head, as you describe. If he is alert and well oriented and behaving/being is usual self without any complain of headache, then it's probably not necessary to see a doctor since no intervention will be done anyway, he'll only be observed. On the other hand, if you notice ANY change in his usual behavior/sleepiness/headache/blurry vision/ vomiting, definitely go see his doctor. He might infect need a head CT based on his assessment. Hope that helps.
