Can A-fib Affect Ecg Result?

I am a 62 year old female who had just one bout with A Fib 6 weeks ago. My heart was beating really fast so I went to the ER where they saw the A Fib on and EKG. They did a chest X-ray which showed no lung problems and heart silhouette and pulmonary vascularity were fine. My blood tests were all normal except for a very small amount of troponin which increased in small increments after 3 tests. They were afraid of a mild heart attack so an echo and a heart cath were performed. No heart attack! No significant blockages were shown on the cath (one at 40% and one at 50% both in LAD). All other arteries were pretty much disease free (two irregularities but no disease ). The echo was ok (I guess) but it said I had grade 2 diastolic dysfunction. There was also mild pulmonary hypertension, mild tricuspid regurgitation, mild mitral annular calcification, mild thickening/calcification of the anterior and posterior mitral leaflets, LV EF 60 hyperdynamic. Ventricular cavity size was normal. Ventricular LVPW as well and IVS wall thicknesses were normal and evidence of a sigmoid septum. No LVOT obstruction. LV fractional change area was normal. Wall scoring: All segments are normal. Right ventricle was normal; RV thickness normal; global RV systolic function is normal. Aortic valve with no regurgitation and no degree of aortic stenosis is present. Aorta within normal limits. No pericardial effusion is seen. No pleural effusion if left or right lateral area. Left and right atrial sizes normal. IWAS IN A FIB WHEN ECHO WAS PERFORMED. HOW MUCH OF A ROLE DID THE A FIB PLAY IN THE OUTCOME OF THE ECHO? I HAD RETURNED normal sinus rhythm for the heart cath. My question is how bad is this diastolic dysfunction? Could it be attributed to the A Fib? Is my heart structurally normal? Cardiologist said it was a possibility that the DD was a false positive...will do another echo in 6 months . I am scared to death as this leads to CHF.

Hello Ma'am

I have gone through your medical details provided by you and i wouild like to thank you for such a detailed information. Now i would like to clear your doubts one by one:

1. AF can have a very minimal effect on the ECHO results, infact we can see the heart in A FIB in ECHO, as heart does not contract fully due to A FIB so some time times the LVEF % come out to be slightly on the lower side in some patients but in your case LVEF is 60% which is totally normal.
2. DIASTOLIC DYSFUNCTION is basically due to the age related wear and tears that happens in the heart. It can very well be take care with medicines like ACE inhibitors/ ARb's.
3. As per the ECHO details provided by you your heart is structurally normal.
4. Usually Diastolic Dysfunction is not to be commented upon in AF patients as AF alters the diagnosis of DD. Yes its advisable to repeat an ECHO in sinus rhythm.

Dont worry you will be alright.

I wish you good health
