Can A Blood Test For Diabetes Miss It ?

I had a fasting blood test for diabetes and it read that I had only a fasting blood sugar level of 80. Could I still have diabetes and the blood sugar was only that low because I hadn t ate in 24 hours?

fasting blood sugar alone misses 30 % of diabetics . better do a 2 hr post prandial sugar for many months or years many have post prandial hyperglycemia before they become overt diabetic . if in doubt do HBA1c . more than 125 fasting means you have Dm . between 100 to 126 y r a prediabetic .
post prandial if less than 140 u r not a diabetic and if more than 140 and less than 200 mg u r a prediabetic and anytime if more than 200 mg u r diabetic . so dont confuse urself . check ur ppbs

good luck. keep in touch\

Hi... Yes your low sugars may be because you were fasting for 24hrs...  The features of diabetes are increased thirst, increased in the frequency of passing urine... If you such symptoms then diabtes is a possibilty..... You can confirm this by repeating the test done.

General & Family Physician Dr. JItendra Sharma's  Response
No not actually. It is pretty rare to miss diagnosis of diabetes. however it is advisable to get done IGT (Impaired glucose tolerance test) and Hba1c.

Overnight fast is sufficient. It is not required to fast for 24 hours for fasting blood sugar assessment.

Hi well come to HCM
To diagnose Diabetes GTT[glucose tolerance test gives better idea even in border line or prodiabetic pt.In mild case symptoms may or may not be there or may not be appreciable by Pt. Even Hba1c will not give much idea, because it can give the control
of last 60 to 90 days.In Gtt one must remember that three days prior to test person
must take his routine diet without any restriction. Thanks
