Can Xanax Cause Kidney Failure?

I have ckd....gfr ranging from 55 to 62. I also have panic attacks (only happening while I m asleep.....I wake up to a racing heart. I have noticed that when this happens, I have been dreaming. It frightens me and I feel weird. The doctor says their panic attacks. When I take a very small dosage of Xanax before bedtime, they do not occur. I don t take Xanax any other time, ever. Can this medicine affect my kidney function adversely?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Xanax does not affect kidney function but the level or elimination of the xanax from the body is affected by the kidneys. This means that the xanax would not worsen your kidney disease. It is excreted (leaves the body) via the kidneys.

So in some persons with kidney disease, there may be decreased excretion. This means that the levels or the effect on the person may be higher since the body has a hard time getting rid of it. If this occurs the dose may need to be adjusted.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
