Can Viagra Be Taken While On Atenolol And Statins?

13 years ago I suffered a fairly major MI (99% blockage to the LAD) and am on the cocktail of Atenolol 25mg, Clopidogrel, 80mg Statin and Atacand 8mg. Now my GP has given me a script for Viagra and said it is ok to take 1/2 tablet. I am a 59 yr old male. Also had a mild MI 2012. You thoughts as I m concerned after reading various side effects. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not safe to take Viagra while taking BP lowering medications and while suffered from MI twice. One of the most common side effects of Viagra is hypotension (fall in blood pressure). So, if taken along with blood pressure lowering medications like Atenolol and Atacand, Viagra may further decrease the blood pressure which may result in dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, flushing, headache, or a rapid pulse or heart rate. And the fact that since you had a myocardial infarction 13 years ago, a sudden fall in BP can be a risk for the recurrent myocardial infarction. Besides, there is also an increased risk for an acute coronary syndrome like myocardial infarction during or shortly after sexual activity in patients treated with Viagra.

Hope these answer your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
