Can Trigestrel Be Taken For Treatment Of Acne?

I went to see a general practitioner, and she gave me trigestrel pills, she said I should take them for three months and told me to buy Benzac gel to use every night after cleansing my face. Will the pills work...I just found out they are for preventing pregnancy...I m worried...I ve never been in a pill before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Yes, Trigestrel can be taken for the treatment of acne.

Trigestrel is a combined oral contraceptive (estrogen and progestin) pill that is commonly prescribed in treatment of acne in women and adolescent girls.

Its most common side effects include headache, breast tenderness, nausea, weight gain and breakthrough bleeding. Although less common but there is a slightly increased risk of blood clots following its prolonged use.

In combination with Trigestrel pills Benzac Gel (Benzoyl Peroxide) is effectively used to treat mild to moderate acne.

So, you can continue to take the treatment as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope this will help you.
